"What actually comes in a windshield repair kit?" is the question people ask right after they've watched a rock chip turn into a five-inch crack and started pricing replacement glass.
A standard do-it-yourself kit contains a resin injector or bridge with a threaded plunger, one or two vials of acrylic resin, a razor blade or scraping tool, a curing strip or small curing film, a pit-filler or finishing resin, a suction cup mount, and a paper towel or cleaning wipe. Some kits add a syringe, a needle, or a small drill bit for opening a clogged pit. What almost none of them include is the one thing that actually determines whether the repair holds: the ability to pull a vacuum on the break before you inject.
That last point matters more than the parts list. A windshield chip repair works because resin displaces the air trapped inside the fracture. If the air stays, the resin sits on top of the break instead of inside it, and the repair looks fine for a week and then spreads. Cheap kits skip the vacuum step entirely and just push resin down with a screw. That is a cosmetic fix, not a structural one.
Know what each piece in the kit is for
The injector is the centerpiece and the part worth inspecting before you buy. A good one is a cylindrical barrel with a rubber-tipped seal that presses against the glass, plus a threaded plunger you can turn by hand. The thread is what allows you to apply and hold pressure gradually. Kits that use a spring-loaded clip or a simple push-down plunger give you no control over how fast the resin moves, and resin that moves too fast traps air bubbles along the fracture line.
Resin comes in two viscosities, and most kits ship one of them. Thin resin, sometimes labeled "penetrating" or "crack" resin, flows into hairline fractures and legs. Thick resin, labeled "pit filler" or "finishing," stays put on the surface and fills the crater where the rock struck. If your kit only has one vial, it's almost certainly the thin type, and you'll want a separate pit filler or the surface will stay visibly pitted even after a structurally sound repair.
The curing strip is a clear plastic film you lay over the filled pit before you expose it to UV. It blocks oxygen, which inhibits acrylic resin from setting, and it flattens the top of the pit so you scrape less later. Some kits use a stiff strip, others a flexible film. The stiff ones are easier to work with on curved glass near the edge of the windshield.
The razor blade is for leveling. You scrape the cured resin flush with the glass in one direction, blade held at a shallow angle. A dull blade or a sawing motion chips the surrounding glass, which is a real risk on a repair that was otherwise fine.

Decide whether the kit can handle your damage
Kits are built for damage under about an inch, and most manufacturers draw the line at a quarter to a half inch for a confident DIY repair. A bullseye or a small star break with legs shorter than a fingernail is the ideal case. A crack that has already run past an inch, a break in the driver's primary viewing area, or anything within a couple of inches of the windshield edge is a different job. Edge cracks propagate because the glass there is bonded to the frame and under constant stress; resin won't hold it.
Temperature is the other hard limit. Resin needs the glass warm enough to flow but not hot enough to cure before you're ready. Working in direct summer sun on a black dashboard is how people end up with resin cured halfway down the injector. Working below freezing is how people end up with resin that won't move at all. Shade and a stable temperature somewhere in the middle of the range are what the instructions assume, even when they don't say so.
If the damage is a chip with no legs, the repair is largely cosmetic and you'll get a good result. If it has legs, you're buying time, not restoring strength. Understand which one you're doing before you open the box.
Check what the kit does not include
No kit ships with a vacuum pump strong enough to do what a professional bridge does, and no kit ships with a UV lamp. The sun is your UV source, and that's fine in most of the country on a clear day, but it means you're weather-dependent. Overcast conditions slow curing to the point where people give up and drive away with uncured resin still under the strip.
You also won't get a pit-opening tool in every kit, and you may need one. The impact point often has a plug of crushed glass and dirt sitting in it. If you don't clear that out, resin can't reach the fracture underneath. A sharp needle or a fine drill bit turned by hand between your fingers is enough; you are not drilling through the windshield, you're clearing the crater.
And you won't get a guarantee. A professional repair usually comes with some assurance that the break won't spread, and if it does, the shop credits the repair toward a replacement. A DIY kit gives you nothing but the resin you already used. That's the honest trade: you save the labor cost, you take on the risk.
Buy the right kit for the damage you have
Match the kit to the break rather than to the price. For a single small bullseye or a clean star, a basic injector kit with one resin and a curing strip is enough. For anything with legs, look for a kit that includes both a thin penetrating resin and a separate pit filler, because you'll be working resin into channels rather than filling a bowl.
Skip kits that advertise a "professional" bridge but show a plastic body with a coarse thread. The bridge needs to hold a seal against the glass while you turn the plunger, and soft plastic distorts under load. Metal-bodied injectors cost more and are worth it if you repair glass more than once.
Buy resin with a date on it. Acrylic resin has a shelf life, and a kit that's been sitting in a warehouse for two years may have resin that has thickened or partially polymerized. If the vial is cloudy or stringy when you open it, it's done, and no amount of technique will save the repair.
Work the repair in the right order
Clean the break first, then mount the injector so the rubber seal sits centered over the pit. Turn the plunger to press the seal against the glass. Most kits have you back the plunger out slightly to create a small vacuum that pulls air out of the fracture; hold it there for a minute or two, then advance the plunger to push resin in. Repeat the cycle if the instructions call for it. On a leg break, you'll often see resin travel down the crack as you alternate pressure and vacuum, and that movement is your signal that the air is being displaced.
Once the break is full, leave the injector in place for the dwell time your resin specifies, then remove it and add a drop of pit filler if you have it. Cover with the curing strip and move into direct sun. Curing takes anywhere from a few minutes to a good while depending on the resin and the light, so give it more time than you think it needs rather than less. When the surface is hard, remove the strip and scrape the excess flush. Then look at it from inside the car in raking light, not from outside in direct sun, because that's the angle that reveals whether the break is actually filled or just capped.
If you can still see the fracture outline after scraping, the resin didn't reach it, and the repair will likely spread. That's the point where a shop call is cheaper than a replacement windshield.
