You can repair a chip in wet weather, but only if you keep liquid water out of the break itself. Rain on the outside of the glass is not the problem. Water inside the chip is the problem. A repair is a resin that gets injected into the damaged area and cured until it bonds to the glass and restores most of the original strength. If the pit and the legs of the chip are full of water, the resin can't displace it, the bond is compromised, and the repair either fails outright or looks cloudy and never fully clears. So the real question isn't whether it's raining. It's whether you can get the break dry and keep it dry for the twenty to thirty minutes the injection takes.
Why rain changes the job
The single biggest variable in a windshield chip repair is moisture in the break. A fresh chip that happened on a dry day is the easiest thing in the world to repair. A chip that has sat through a rainstorm, or that got wet within the first hour or two, is a different job. Water wicks into the fracture by capillary action and settles in the tightest part of the crack, which is exactly where you need resin to go.
There are two ways to handle that. You dry the break out first, or you use a resin formulated to tolerate some residual moisture. Drying is the reliable path. Tolerating moisture is a compromise, and it's the reason some wet-weather repairs look hazy six months later. The haze isn't dirt. It's cured resin that never fully bonded because a film of water sat between it and the glass.
The temperature matters almost as much as the water. Resin gets thick and slow in the cold, and it cures too fast in direct sun or high heat. A rainy day is usually a cool day, which is genuinely in your favor, but a cold garage in winter is a different problem than a warm spring shower.
Getting the break dry
Park under cover first. A garage, a carport, a gas station canopy, or a parking garage all work. If you have no cover at all, you can still work, but you'll be fighting the rain the whole time and you need to plan for it.
Once you're out of the rain, dry the surface and then dry the break itself. A hair dryer on low, held a foot or so away and moved constantly, will drive moisture out of the pit and the legs. Don't hold it in one spot. Glass doesn't like a concentrated heat source, and a sudden temperature difference across a chip that already has a crack in it is a good way to turn a chip into a running crack. Warm the area gently, then let it sit. Repeat a couple of times. The goal is to get the glass warm to the touch, not hot.
A common trick is to let the car sit in the sun with the windshield facing the light, which does the same job more slowly. On a rainy day that's obviously not available, so the hair dryer or a heat gun on its lowest setting is the practical answer. If you use a heat gun, keep it moving and keep it well back. Those things will crack a windshield.

- Let it cool to room temperature before injecting resin.
- Never inject resin into glass that's still warm to the touch from a heat source.
Sealing the pit against water
If rain is still falling and you can't get under cover, the priority shifts from repairing to protecting. A chip that's open to the weather will collect water, dirt, and road grime, and every hour it stays open makes the eventual repair worse. Clear tape over the pit is the standard field fix. Packing tape or any wide clear tape works. Press it down firmly so it seals around the edges, and replace it if it peels.
What you're doing is buying time. Tape won't stop a chip from spreading if the glass is under stress, and it won't stop temperature cycling from working on the crack. But it will keep the break dry enough that a proper repair later still has a good chance of coming out clear. If you can get to a shop within a day or two, tape is usually enough. If the chip is on the driver's side in your line of sight, or if it's already got legs running toward the edge of the glass, don't wait for the weather. Get it looked at.
One thing tape does not do is hold a chip together indefinitely. If you're driving in the rain with a taped chip, avoid slamming doors, avoid the defroster on full blast directly on the glass, and avoid potholes at speed. All three put stress across the break.
Doing the repair in wet conditions
If you have cover and a dry break, the procedure is the same as any other day. Clean the pit, mount the bridge, inject the resin, let it cure, scrape the excess, polish. The rain outside is irrelevant once the glass is dry and you're out of the weather.
The failure mode in wet conditions is almost always the same: the repair looks fine immediately and then goes cloudy or develops a visible line within weeks. That's water that was still in the break when the resin went in. If you're doing this yourself and you're not confident the break is dry, wait. A chip that sits taped for two days and gets repaired properly is a better outcome than a chip repaired today that has to be redone or, worse, spreads.
Professionals have an advantage here that's worth paying for in bad weather. They have covered bays, they have moisture-tolerant resins, and they have the experience to tell by looking whether a break is dry enough to take resin. If the chip is large, if it's in the driver's field of view, or if it's already cracking, the weather is a reason to call someone, not a reason to postpone.
When to skip the DIY route
Not every chip is a candidate for a rainy-day repair, and some aren't candidates for repair at all. A chip smaller than a quarter, with no legs reaching the edge of the glass, is usually a straightforward fix. A chip with cracks running to the edge, a chip directly in the driver's primary line of sight, or damage on the inside layer of the laminated glass is a replacement conversation, not a repair conversation.
The other hard limit is time. A chip that's been open to the weather for weeks has likely absorbed enough moisture and contamination that a clear repair isn't realistic. It can often still be stabilized, which stops it from spreading, but it may never be invisible. That's an honest trade-off, and it's better to know it going in than to be disappointed by the result.
If you're weighing whether to drive on a chipped windshield in the rain, the answer depends on where the chip is and how big it is. A small chip off to the passenger side is fine to drive on. A chip in your line of sight, or one that's actively spreading, is not something to put off because of a wet forecast. Cover it, keep it dry, and get it looked at as soon as the roads are safe.
