"Is it worth fixing a chip myself, or should I just take it to a shop?"
Do it yourself if the damage is a small surface chip on the outer layer of the windshield, away from the driver's primary line of sight, and you catch it within a few days. Take it to a shop if the damage is a crack, if it reaches the edge of the glass, if it's directly in front of the driver, or if the chip has been sitting there long enough that dirt and moisture have worked into it. The DIY kits are real and they work, but they work on a narrow band of damage, and the failure mode when you use one outside that band is that you make the damage harder to repair properly later.
What does a windshield chip repair kit actually do?
A DIY kit injects a liquid resin into the break and cures it, usually with UV light from the sun or a small included lamp. That's the whole mechanism. The resin fills the void, bonds to the glass, and restores most of the optical clarity and a good portion of the structural integrity.
What it does not do is remove the damage. The break is still there, filled. Under the right light you'll still see the outline of it. If you're expecting the chip to vanish, you'll be disappointed, and that disappointment is the most common complaint from people who try this.
The kits themselves run cheap enough that the decision is less about money than about whether you're treating the right kind of damage. A kit is a syringe of resin, a bridge or applicator that holds the syringe against the glass under pressure, some curing strips, a razor blade, and instructions. The pressure step matters more than people expect: you're pushing resin into a void, and if you don't get the applicator seated properly and hold it there long enough, you fill the top of the pit and leave the bottom of it empty. That looks fine in the driveway and shows up as a dark spot in low sun.
Which chips can you actually fix yourself?
Bullseyes, star breaks, and small combination breaks where the damage is confined to the outer glass layer and nothing has spread. A bullseye is the classic cone-shaped impact. A star break has legs radiating out. If the legs are short and the whole thing is roughly the size of a coin or smaller, a kit has a fair shot.
What disqualifies damage:
- Anything that has become a crack, meaning it has a length rather than a diameter. Resin doesn't bridge a running crack, and flexing from temperature change and road vibration will keep it moving.
- Damage within a couple of inches of the edge of the windshield. The edge is where the glass is bonded to the frame and carries the most stress. A break there compromises the bond and spreads.
- Damage in the driver's primary line of sight. Even a good repair leaves a faint optical distortion, and that distortion in your central field of view is a real problem at night.
- Damage on the inside layer of the laminated glass. If you can catch it with a fingernail on the inside surface, it's through the inner pane, and that's a replacement.
- Anything contaminated. If you've driven through rain or a car wash with the chip open, or if it's been weeks, there's dirt and moisture in the break. Resin won't bond to a dirty surface.
That last one is where most DIY attempts go wrong, and it's a timing problem rather than a skill problem. A fresh chip is clean. A chip that's been through a few weather cycles is not, and no kit on the shelf fixes that. You can sometimes improve it, but you're working against material that's already in there.
How much does DIY cost versus a shop?
The kit is the cheap half of the comparison and the shop visit is the expensive half, and the gap is wide enough that it dominates most people's thinking. That's the wrong way to weigh it, though, because the shop has equipment you don't: a vacuum cycle to pull air and moisture out of the break before injecting, a pressure cycle calibrated to the specific damage type, and resin matched to the repair. A vacuum step is the single biggest technical difference. Pulling the air out first is what lets resin fill the whole void rather than just the opening.
A shop also carries the liability. If their repair fails and the windshield cracks out, that's on them. If your repair fails, you're buying a windshield, and a windshield costs far more than either the kit or the professional repair. That asymmetry is the real argument for paying someone, and it's an argument about risk, not about price.
There's a middle path people forget: many insurance policies cover chip repair with no deductible, specifically because insurers would rather pay for a repair than a replacement. Call your insurer before you buy a kit. If repair is covered at no cost to you, the DIY question answers itself.
What goes wrong when you DIY it?
Three failure modes, in rough order of frequency.
The first is an incomplete fill. You see the chip is still visible, so you add more resin, and now you've got a raised blob on the glass. That gets scraped down with the razor blade, and if you're careless you scratch the surrounding glass. Scratches around a repair are worse than the original chip in terms of both appearance and what a shop has to deal with.
The second is curing too fast or too slow. Resin needs UV. On an overcast day, or in a garage, the curing strip sits there doing nothing and the resin sags before it sets. In direct summer sun the surface can skin over before the resin has fully worked into the break, trapping air underneath.
The third, and the one that costs real money, is attempting a repair on damage that was never a candidate. You inject resin into a crack that's already running. It looks better for a week. Then a cold morning comes, the glass contracts, and the crack walks across the windshield. Now you're not comparing a kit to a repair, you're comparing a kit to a full replacement, and the money you saved is a rounding error against that.
Temperature is the variable people underestimate throughout. Glass expands and contracts with temperature, and damage that's stable in mild weather can move on the first hard freeze or the first hot afternoon in a parked car. That's why timing matters more than technique. A chip repaired the day it happens has a much better prognosis than the same chip repaired after a month of temperature cycling, regardless of who does it.
When is the shop the only sensible answer?
When the damage is in the driver's primary line of sight, when it's within a couple of inches of the edge, when it's already a crack, when it's through to the inner layer, or when it's been contaminated. Also when you can't see well enough to judge: a chip with a lot of small radiating legs is hard to assess by eye, and a shop will tell you in five minutes whether it's repairable or whether you're looking at a replacement.
There's a practical argument beyond the repair itself. A windshield is a structural element, not just a window. It's part of what keeps the roof from crushing in a rollover and what the passenger airbag pushes against. A repair that restores clarity but leaves a compromised area is a repair that traded appearance for a safety margin. That's a bad trade, and it's the one people make when they DIY damage that should have gone to a shop.
So the honest split: small, fresh, clean, off-center damage is a reasonable DIY job and you'll save real money. Everything else goes to a professional, and you'll spend more than a kit costs but less than a windshield does. The kit isn't a bad product. It's a narrow tool, and the people who get burned by it are the ones who used it outside its range.
